Financial Abuse and Period Poverty

Financial abuse is a common form of domestic violence. A financial abuser will take control of all household resources, limiting or cutting off the victim’s access to assets.

Financial abuse can perpetuate Period Poverty. Menstrual hygiene items are expensive, adding up to hundreds of dollars each year.

Even if a household has enough money to afford period products, an abuser may not allow their partner to buy the items they need.

As with other forms of abuse, financial abuse may begin subtly and progress over time.

Monthly periods can become a focus for abusers who are either uncomfortable with their partner’s natural cycle or find it an opportunity for embarrassment. Funds needed to purchase period products might be withheld, while efforts are also made to shame the woman for her flow.

Forcing a woman to go without period products may result in difficulty maintaining employment. Unemployment – and not contributing to the household income – can further exacerbate an abusive situation.
