Heading To Campus In The Era Of Period Poverty

For many recent high school graduates, starting life on a 2 or 4 year college campus can bring unexpected financial challenges, including Period Poverty.

College may be the first time a young adult is responsible for their own finances and it is not uncommon to forget to budget for period supplies. During the first few months on campus this can be disconcerting for a new student who might not yet know what resources are available through the university.

Lack of access to period products can lead to missed classes, exams, or decreased concentration, negatively impacting academic performance.

Not having adequate period supplies can take a toll on a college student’s mental well-being, increasing stress. Dignity Grows’ own research* shows Period Poverty can be disruptive when forming and maintaining friendships, which can be especially detrimental during the first months away from home.

Period Poverty can hinder students’ ability to fully participate in extracurricular activities, internships, or part-time jobs due to the challenges of managing their periods.

While adjusting to life without their family or mentors nearby, students facing Period Poverty may be tempted to use menstrual hygiene products for longer than recommended, which can lead to infections and other health issues.
